چکیده

We are developing a system in which a user can control virtual agents through natural language dialogue. We particularly focus on the semantic analysis of spatial expressions in natural language instructions. Spatial expressions are relative to the speaker’s viewpoint and the indicated positions can change dynamically. In this paper we propose a semantic representation using lambda structures. Some features of lambda structure enable us to keep the speaker’s viewpoints in such semantic representations undetermined, to keep track of changing positions, and to encapsulate representations like English prepositions. With this representation, we can handle this kind of spatial expressions efficiently. We also state the method of translating natural language instructions to this representation.

Learning Physiotherapy through Virtual Action

We describe a research framework for virtualizing documented physiotherapy instructions. Our approach bridges the gap between human understanding and the written manuals of instructions for physiotherapy. Techniques of Natural Language Processing involving semantic and spatial information processing are important in this approach. We have also explained the physiotherapy considerations that we ...

“Kairai” - Software Robots Understanding Natural Language

In this paper we give an overview of the “Kairai” virtual actor system, which understands natural language instructions and displays the results via software robots. In controlling software robots acting in a 3-D world, the system needs to access various types of information from language expressions. Here, we concentrate especially a handling anaphora, used to indicate objects or positions in ...

Shakespearean spatial rules

Many games and simulations utilize modularized low-level code to move characters about in an environment. This requires extensive technical skill to translate basic high-level actions, as well as extensive time to write code, which includes very detailed instructions on what and when actions will occur across all agents. Other options exist such as mocap files; however, most are not highly dyna...

Evaluation of a Semantic Similarity Measure for Natural Language Spatial Relations

Consistent and flawless communication between humans and machines is the precondition for a computer to process instructions correctly. While machines use well-defined languages and formal rules to process information, humans prefer natural language expressions with vague semantics. Similarity comparisons are central to the human way of thinking: we use similarity for reasoning on new informati...

Integration of Geometric and Conceptual Reasoning for Interacting with Virtual Environments

This paper describes the knowledge processing in the CODY Virtual Constructor, an operational system enabling the interactive assembly of complex aggregates in a virtual environment. Two forms of reasoners axe used: a geometric reasoner that infers spatial properties of scene objects and a conceptual reasoner that keeps track of the evolving aggregate’s assembly structure. The combination of th...
